Google Bails on Wave

Google Bails on Wave: "

Google is halting development on Wave, its web app for real-time communication.

“We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product,” Google Senior Vice President of Operations Urs Hölzle said on the official Google Blog Wednesday.

The company cites slow user adoption as the reason for its decision. Google will continue to support Wave through the end of the year, at which point the product will be phased out.

Wave debuted in May, 2009 at Google I/O, the company’s yearly developer conference. Developers were excited about Wave — it incorporated several new technologies that simultaneously pushed the boundaries of what was possible in browser-based apps, and tapped into the craze of real-time communication fueled by Twitter and Facebook. You typed something into a Wave, and your collaborators at the other end of the line saw what you were typing almost immediately. Everything was built in JavaScript and HTML5. We were intrigued by its possibilities, and we even proclaimed that Wave could one day replace the e-mail inbox as our primary form of communication.

In the weeks after Wave’s debut, invitations to the beta test were scarce, and the unlucky souls stuck on the outside were clamoring to get in.

But once they started using Wave, most people were confused about how it fit into their lives. Sure, Wave let you collaborate with several people at once on documents, share photos with multiple recipients, and it created a searchable, editable stream of pure information. But there are already a raft of tools to do these things — it’s easy enough to use Google Docs to collaborate on documents, there are plenty of photo sharing services users are already invested in, and the search and chat tools inside Gmail are well above par. Wave just seemed a bit too crowded with information — it was e-mail, chat, media sharing and document editing all rolled into one (admittedly busy) interface — and the fucntionality too redundant.

Hölzle admits Googlers were scratching their heads, too:

We were equally jazzed about Google Wave internally, even though we weren’t quite sure how users would respond to this radically different kind of communication. The use cases we’ve seen show the power of this technology: sharing images and other media in real time; improving spell-checking by understanding not just an individual word, but also the context of each word; and enabling third-party developers to build new tools like consumer gadgets for travel, or robots to check code.

But despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily “liberate” their content from Wave.

It’s likely that Google will continue to use the technology born in Wave to enhance the products it was intended to replace, like Gmail and Google Docs. Docs already has an excellent real-time backend sharing system that lets you see others’ edits with very low latency, and Gmail continues to show itself as not only a robust web app but a mini app platform, with things like video chat, document editing, Twitter-like status updates and cloud-based storage built in.

Buzz, another product launched at an I/O event, is also a likely home for some of Wave’s technology. The service is in a tight race with Twitter and Facebook to deliver real-time status updates to the masses. Last month, the company opened up its firehose, allowing developers to access shared updates and media as quickly as possible.

Tip: 5 things you may not know you can do with attachments in Gmail

via Gmail Blog by Arielle on 6/16/10

Posted by Arielle Reinstein, Product Marketing Manager

The more I use Google Docs, the less I have to deal with sending attachments back and forth. While attachments' days may be waning, they're still very much a part of most people's email experience. Here are five things you may not know you can do with Gmail to make sending, receiving, viewing, and finding attachments easier:

1. Drag attachments in
Simply drag files from your desktop right into the message you're composing and they'll upload from there. (Make sure you're using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox 3.6 for this to work.)

2. Select multiple attachments
Attaching multiple files one by one is no fun. Instead, just multi-select the files you want to attach by holding down the Ctrl key (or Command on a Mac) and clicking on each file you want to attach. Holding down the Shift key will select a continuous list of files.

3. Never forget an attachment again
Gmail looks for phrases in your email that suggest you meant to attach a file (things like "I've attached" or "see attachment") and warns you if it looks like you forgot to do so. Every day, this saves tons of people the embarrassment of having to send a follow up email with the file actually attached.

4. View attachments online
When you receive an attachment, sometimes you just want to view it and there's no need to download or save to your desktop. The Google Docs viewer allows you to view .pdf, .ppt, and .tiff files in your browser. Just click the "View" link at the bottom of the message.

5. Find that long lost attachment via search
If you're looking for an attachment someone has sent to you, Gmail's advanced search operators can help you find what you're looking for quickly and accurately.

A couple examples:

  • To find all messages that contain attachments: has:attachment
  • To find all messages from your friend David that contain attachments: from:david has:attachment
  • To find all messages that have .pdf attachments: has:attachment pdf
  • To find a specific attachment named physicshomework.txt: filename:physicshomework.txt

Top 10 Most Downloaded Business Applications [Movers & Shakers]

via MakeUseOf.com by Karl L. Gechlik on 6/7/10

It’s time once again for our featured Movers and Shakers post. Each week, we take one software category and list the top ten most downloaded free apps.

This week we are looking at a CNet category entitled Business Software. These are applications that you can use to assist your day to day work. It doesn’t matter if you are a freelance worker or a 9 to 5’er, everyone will find an application that they either already use or something that they will. Some of the applications included in this category are Open Office, Adobe Reader and others along these lines.

1. Foxit Reader

1 FoxIt has been my PDF reader of choice for some time now. I originally read about it on MakeUseOf and have been using it ever since. Less likely to be attacked and has a lot of neat features like automatically filling in a PDF and being able to save and email the form. It opens 10 times quicker than Adobe Acrobat reader so, Check it out.

2. Adobe Reader

2 Adobe created the PDF format so they have had their free reader on the market for some time now. Most corporate users use this and it has been the standard forever but if you want my recommendation – use FoxIt (see above).

3. OpenOffice.org

3 OpenOffice offers a free suite of applications that rival Microsoft Office. If you are not a power user then its version of Word (Writer), PowerPoint (Impress), Excel (Math, Draw and Calc) will be sure to get you by. And at a much lower price than MS Office – it is hard to argue with.

4. Nitro PDF Reader (32-bit)

4 Another PDF reader for 32-bit operating systems adds some pro features that were once only seen in Adobe Acrobat Professional. If you want to be able to drag and drop documents to create PDFs then look no further than this free alternative.

5. Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003

5 Now we all know that the Microsoft Office Suite is expensive and sometimes we work on computers that do not have Word available to us. In these situations, we can use the Office Word Viewer to read Word 2003 (or earlier) files. Just install and you will be able to view and print the document but not edit.
  1. PowerPoint Viewer 2007 You can use this viewer to open and watch PowerPoint presentations from PowerPoint 2007 and earlier. This is very helpful for giving a presentation from a computer that does not have PowerPoint installed.
  2. PDF ReDirect Using this free application you can create, encrypt and append to already created PDF documents.
  3. Excel Calendar Template Have you ever wanted to print your own calendars – either blank or filled in? Well then, this is the application for you.
  4. Office Convert PDF to JPG JPEG TIFF Free Have you ever had the need to convert a PDF to another image file type? Well, if so then this will do the trick for you.
  5. Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats If you are working with Office 2003 or earlier, you might want to be able to open the new .docx or .xlsx file formats. Using this pack, you can open them and modify them in your current version without an issue.

12:10 am Martand Joshi: Watched Rajniti ... a fast paced Political Drama ... though its not orignial storyline and inspired from mixture of plots from God Father .. or our own Sakaar and Mahabharata .... But its handled amazingly. Hats off to Prakash Jha ..

Can't talk on every one's acting .. as there are so many actors that every one got very little share ... but Nana Patel, Manoj Bajpai and Ranbir kapoor steals the show clearly .. Manoj Bajpai is at its best ... while Ranbir Kapoor is GenNext Superstar ..no doubts ...

Funniest fact is Arjun Rampal / Ajay Devgan's mother in movie is younger than them in real life :D

Kat is natural beauty and is very gorgeous with her new with-bindia look ... For Girls Bindia is next fashion, for sure ;)

In all .. Good Movie ... I luv it ... :D
